Hello from the Camp nurses!
We are off to a great start .... Inevitably there have been a few bumps, scrapes and mosquito bites but that certainly hasn't stopped the campers from taking advantage of all the activities available around the camp. As always we are amazed by our campers amazing perserverance and their “can do” attitude. They are always willing to try new things and challenge themselves…They don't let their transplant, central lines or gtubes slow them down. All they want is to enjoy camp, have fun with their fellow campers and form new friendships.
We are often asked... How many medications do you give? Well we counted them up yesterday... A total of 450 doses per day! That's over 2,500 in the week we are here. So we're busy for sure but we love it here. How can we not? We often get hugs, high fives and if your lucky someone will make you a bracelet.
The second question we often get asked by colleagues and parents is why volunteer to come to camp and what do we get out of the experience? Most of us have taken care of these campers during a time in their lives when they were extremely sick. Being at camp we have the chance to see them living their lives to the fullest and taking advantage of every opportunity. So being at Camp Kivita makes us feel so proud of the work we are do and after spending a week at camp we can truly say- Organ Donation WORKS!
Camp gives some of these kids an opportunity to experience something they would never get to do because of their medical needs. It's hard for us to complain about the extra work and sleepless nights when you get to see these kids smile ear to ear after jumping into the lake for the first time! It's heartwarming and makes it worth it.
So that's it from us... We need to go give some medications!
