Thursday Reflection - Inspiring words by our camper turned counsellor

Dear Campers, Families and Friends, Yesterday our own Mackenzie, a camp kivita former camper who has returned this summer as a volunteer counsellor was interviewed by the CBC radio channel to talk about her experiences with camp kivita. If you did not get a chance to hear her amazing interview we will be getting a copy and sharing it on the website very soon. We could not be more proud and inspired by Mackenzie. We were touched and inspired to hear her talk about what camp has meant to her, how she has made friendships that have endured so many years later, how important and impactful it is been to be around others who have been through similar health care experiences, who understand, and who get it. Hearing Mackenzie articulate how coming back as a counsellor has allowed her to give back, to role model for younger kids in similar health care journeys, to be able to demonstrate that she's been there and understands, and it is ok. As she spoke with such honesty and emotion, it was hard not to feel overcome. When asked by the interviewer what she would like to tell others about why they should become donors, her frank answer stating how donating an organ can change a child's life, can give a person back their life, was a tacit challenge to each of us to advocate for organ donation and transplantation. She challenged us all in saying "this is your chance to be a hero".  Please help spread the word that organ donation works. We are so fortunate to have Mackenzie return to share this unique perspective with our campers and we are inspired by her honesty, leadership and for serving as an ambassador to the next generation of campers and inspiring a new generation of organ donor heroes. It may be cool and rainy but our spirits are high and camp fun is in full swing. Yours in camping, Stacey
